Magic Mike's Last Dance: Mike will finally be able to have a relationship within the HBO Max sequel
During a roundtable interview featuring Steven Soderbergh and Zoe Kravitz about their upcoming film KIMI The director spoke about the highly anticipated third installment in the Magic Mike storyline, titled Magic Mike's Last Dance. Soderbergh also spoke about encouraging Channing Tatum to keep telling the story, which is, in part, an inspiration for Tatum's time as a stripper from Tampa, Florida.
Soderbergh was the director of Magic Mike, which was released in 2012. It was a big popular with critics and viewers, who not only praised the sexy appeal and dance sequences but also the script, direction, and the performances. Tatum starred alongside Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, and Matthew McConaughey. Magic Mike's Last Dance movie and Manganiello were also back along with Tatum for the sequel to Magic Mike XXL, this time directed by Gregory Jacobs, who was the first assistant director on the first film. The sequel was a huge financial and critical success.
When Magic Mike was still just one idea in a sea of ideas, Soderbergh remembers pointing to it as the film Tatum should concentrate on. He said that when Tatum presented his idea on the set of Haywire, it immediately caught his interest. When the story was complete, Soderbergh was eager to join in to make the project become a possibility.
A third film is coming soon, and that was announced in November, named Magic Mike's Last Dance, Soderbergh gave us a little glimpse of what to expect in the finale. He explained that while he was aware that about the Magic Mike concept would be successful, he did not know that Tatum was looking to expand the world of the film into a broader world, one that deals with the subject of relationships, masculinity and respect. The concept was further developed in the sequel.
"The third film is sort like the culmination of all that we've been discussing in this space. It's not just about taking the dance to a new level, but actually getting into the romance aspect that's been an undercurrent in all the movies. Mike has a romantic relationship that's at the center of this movie, while everything else happens. We haven't done that before."
Although Last Dance could very well be the last dance of Mike Lane Soderbergh's return to his series is a thrilling development. Following the XXL sequel, we've reached the top of the mountain, however, there's more to reveal about Mike's life story.
